Want to talk about sex? Got questions? The media has a lot to say about sex. You hear about it in the music you listen to, you see it in the shows and movies you watch and on the websites you visit. What the media often forgets to tell you is that there are consequences to sexual activity. Sex in a relationship that has not been built on the foundations of trust, time, and commitment can have some serious consequences.

If you’re involved in a sexual relationship, or thinking about getting involved, consider asking yourself the following questions:

What will happen if I get pregnant?

Pregnancy is a real possibility for any couple choosing to have sex. If a pregnancy is unplanned, none of the choices are simple or easy. If you use condoms or birth control, remember that they don’t claim to be 100% failproof. Are you willing to settle for less than the best?

What about STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections)?

If you are using condoms, it’s important to know that they are not 100% effective, and that they offer very little protection against certain types of STIs.  Birth control pills may prevent pregnancy, when used exactly as prescribed, but they do not offer any protection against STIs.

Every sexual partner you have increases your risk of contracting an STI. Unfortunately, many people are dishonest about their sexual history, if it will mean the difference between having sex with their current partner or not. An STI could affect your health, your self-esteem, even your reputation. What are those things worth to you? What are you willing to risk?

What is abstinence?

Abstinence does not mean taking a vow to never have sex. Abstinence simply means waiting until later to have sex. It's not having sex for now. We believe most people want to have great sex. Great sex is sex that both people are prepared for (and that means really being prepared for whatever could happen as a result).

Your questions about sex are important and you deserve to talk to a real person about them. We will listen to your concerns confidentially and without judgment.
